Although Punjab Kings got off to a flying start in the new season with two victories, their momentum was disrupted by two consecutive losses due to their inability to post competitive scores.
When skipper Shikhar Dhawan failed to carry the team against Sunrisers Hyderabad, the other batsmen could only manage a total of 153 for 8 against Gujarat Titans, with Shahrukh Khan's nine-ball 22 being the only notable contribution.
The major reason behind PBKS's low total was their inability to score runs during the middle overs between the 10th and 15th overs, during which they played 56 dot balls. This is an area where the team needs to improve in order to succeed.
"We didn't manage to score many runs on the board, and we need to address that issue going forward. If a team plays 56 dot balls, you end up losing the game," said Dhawan following the team's loss.
Dhawan has been undoubtedly the most impactful player for Punjab Kings, scoring 40, 86 not out, and 99 not out in his first three innings. However, the inconsistency of the other batters, such as young opening partner Prabhsimran Singh, Matthew Short, and Jitesh Sharma, has been a cause for concern.
While the batting has struggled, the bowling unit, led by young Arshdeep Singh, has been in good form. Arshdeep and England's Sam Curran almost took the game to the last ball while defending a modest total on a belter of a wicket before Rahul Tewatia intervened on Thursday. Among the spinners, Harpreet Brar and Rahul Chahar have been effective, but they have been let down by the team's inability to post competitive scores.
The Lucknow Super Giants, on the other hand, have won their last two games and can move to the top spot in the IPL standings with another win on Saturday. While skipper KL Rahul has struggled with his strike rate, the Super Giants have found new heroes to take the team home. Krunal Pandya produced an all-round performance against Sunrisers, while Nicholas Pooran's impressive 19-ball 62 helped them chase down a challenging 212 against Royal Challengers Bangalore in their last match.
LSG has a balanced batting line-up with opener Kyle Mayers performing well in the first two matches. The lower middle order, comprising Marcus Stoinis, Pooran, and Ayush Badoni, demonstrated their ability to win crucial games. However, Deepak Hooda has struggled so far. Losing three wickets in the powerplay almost jeopardised their chase against RCB, and LSG will hope that it was just an aberration. Among the bowlers, they have a good mix of pace and spin, with Mark Wood and Avesh Khan looking impressive, while leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi, veteran leggie Amit Mishra, and Krunal Pandya have all performed well in their respective roles.
