Both teams enter the match on the back of impressive victories in their first games of the IPL 2023 season. Punjab Kings, captained by Shikhar Dhawan, triumphed over Kolkata Knight Riders in their opening match despite missing key players Livingstone and Rabada. The Royals, on the other hand, will aim to replicate their attacking top-order batting, incisive new-ball performance, and tight spin bowling that helped them defeat the Sunrisers Hyderabad in their first game. Currently, both teams have won their opening fixtures and scored highly, but the Royals are ranked higher on the points table at number two owing to their superior Net Run Rate, while Punjab Kings are at number five.

Bhanuka Rajapaksa played an exceptional role for Punjab Kings, scoring a noteworthy half-century that helped the team to post a competitive total. Arshdeep Singh also played a vital role in the team's victory by taking three wickets. In contrast, Rajasthan Royals' top-order batting was the main highlight of their victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad. Jos Buttler, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Sanju Samson all scored impressive scores of over 50 in the match. Yuzvendra Chahal also made a significant contribution to RR's win by picking up five wickets in the game.

The Barsapara Stadium located in Guwahati has developed a reputation as a favourable ground for batsmen due to its firm pitch providing consistent bounce, enabling batters to hit large shots. In recent games, bowlers have found it difficult to control the scoring rate, and this trend is likely to continue in the upcoming match. The pitch primarily features a hard deck, which allows batsmen to rely on the bounce and hit the ball powerfully.
