Following their loss to Punjab Kings by 7 runs (D/L Method) in their first game, Kolkata Knight Riders are understandably apprehensive about their upcoming match against Royal Challengers Bangalore. This is due to the fact that Faf is currently hitting the ball exceptionally well, and King Kohli has returned to form. The 9th match of the IPL 2023 will take place at Eden Gardens on April 6th, with KKR hosting RCB from 7:30 pm onwards.
During their opening game, KKR were tasked with chasing a target of 192 runs set by Punjab Kings. Despite a valiant effort by Venkatesh Iyer and skipper Nitish Rana, KKR's poor scoring rate led to their defeat, even after Andre Russell attempted to make a late impact. Rain also played a factor in the outcome, with KKR ultimately losing by 7 runs (D/L Method).
In contrast, RCB triumphed over Mumbai Indians in their first match of the season, with Faf and Kohli's 148-run partnership off 89 balls being the standout performance. RCB currently sits in the third spot with 2 points.
RCB has won three out of their last five games against KKR, including their most recent encounter in IPL 2022, where they restricted KKR to just 128 runs before chasing down the target in the final over of the game. Even at Eden Gardens, RCB has won three out of the last five games.
The injury-ravaged KKR are receiving increasingly worrying news with each passing day. First, Shreyas Iyer was ruled out for the season, and now Shakib Al Hasan has suffered a similar fate. With Lockie Ferguson also injured and Litton Das yet to arrive, the team has only five international players at its disposal. Newly-appointed skipper Nitish Rana faces a challenging task in leading the team forward. KKR has opted for Mandeep Singh and Rahmanullah Gurbaz as openers instead of Venkatesh Iyer. Gurbaz had a decent PSL season, scoring at a strike rate of 150, but with Anukul Roy batting third, KKR's top order lacks depth and experience.
KKR's middle order of Nitish Rana, Venkatesh Iyer, and Andre Russell will be key players to watch throughout the season. However, Rana has struggled against RCB since his heroics (85 off 46) at Eden Gardens in 2019, and fans will be hoping for a captain's knock from him. Iyer scored 34 runs off 28 balls in the first game, but as an impact player, he failed to impress. Hopefully, he will show his worth in the upcoming matches. Russell has scored at a strike rate of 200-plus in his last six games against RCB, and his last game at Eden Gardens against them saw him score 65 off 25 balls, hitting nine sixes. In total, Russell has hit 22 sixes in these six games, and he is expected to be KKR's top batter.
In their opening game against Punjab Kings, KKR's bowlers struggled to restrict the runs. World's leading T20I wicket-taker Tim Southee took two wickets but gave away 54 runs. Umesh Yadav and Varun Chakravarthy put in impressive performances, however. To counter the likes of Kohli and Faf, KKR will need Narine and Thakur to step up, or they will be facing another big score to chase.
The 9th T20 match of IPL 2023 is scheduled to take place at Eden Gardens on 6th April starting from 7:30 pm onwards. With a seating capacity of 70,000 spectators, the stadium has previously hosted 42 Test matches, 34 ODIs and 12 T20Is. RCB holds the unfortunate record of scoring the lowest number of runs at this venue. Back in 2017, KKR had bowled out RCB for just 49 runs, with none of the RCB players able to reach a score in double digits.
