The match number 16 of the Indian Premier League (IPL), Delhi Capitals (DC) and Mumbai Indians (MI) will both be looking to get off the mark on the points table. DC has suffered three consecutive defeats, including losses to Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), Gujarat Titans (GT), and Rajasthan Royals (RR), while MI has lost two in a row, against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK).
Both teams are facing challenges in all departments. DC has been struggling with their top-order batting, with Prithvi Shaw raising concerns about his ability against fast bowling. Shaw has been dismissed in different fashion - pace, bounce, and swing - in his three innings, and it seems there isn't a quick fix to his technical issues. Meanwhile, DC's pacers, including Anrich Nortje, Mukesh Kumar, and Khaleel Ahmed, have been taken to the cleaners, and the team must address that issue.
On the other hand, MI is yet to find consistency with their bowling and batting. MI's batting has heavily relied on Tilak Varma, who has been impressive with the bat, scoring 106 runs at a strike rate of 165.32. However, no other MI player has scored more than 50 runs, indicating that the team is yet to find their rhythm with the bat. The bowling attack has taken just five wickets, indicating that there is a need for improvement in that department.
DC will be without their captain Rishabh Pant, who is out for the entire season due to injury. Meanwhile, MI's Jofra Archer missed their last game due to a niggle in his elbow, and it remains to be seen if he will be available for this fixture. If Archer is unable to play, it could further weaken MI's bowling attack, which has already been struggling.
Despite MI's struggles, Varma has shown the potential to change the course of a match. In their match against RCB, he blasted 84 runs off 46 deliveries, steering his side from 20 for 3 to 171 for 7. While it wasn't enough for the win, it was a competitive total. However, with the rest of the MI batters struggling, keeping Varma quiet could go a long way towards helping DC pick up their first points of the season.
DC's David Warner has been in good form, scoring 158 runs, including two half-centuries, and is expected to lead from the front. Getting the opportunity in the absence of Mitchell Marsh, who has gone back home to get married, Manish Pandey lasted only one ball in the last match, and the veteran batter will be keen to make an impact in this fixture.
All in all, DC seems to have a slight edge over MI and could potentially win their first match of the season. However, both teams will need to improve in all departments if they hope to make a mark in the IPL.
